Is this review on the web ? if not what did they have to say about this unit (esp its ez set up remote that calibrates automatically (but doesnt have an equalizer like the Pioneer 49TX)?

I just got it in the mail so I doubt it will be on the web. Give 'em a few weeks.

As far as the EZ Set Up, the reviewer gave the usual 'it got it within 1-2 dB all around'. Actually, like most S&V reviews, there was little substance. Personally, I look to the hardware tests to see how well any receiver backs up it's claims...then filter in any opinions offered.

I cant find this receiver on the HK site or anywhere else - is it five channels ? what power into 8 ohm/4ohm all channels driven ? How does it compare with Denon 5803 and Pioneer 49TX re weight and AV processing features.

Anyone out there who actually owns this reciever, or has auditioned at length ?

    does it have
    lip synch (all channel delay)
    12 v triggers
    rs232
    assignable inputs
bass management (all channels, analog AND digital?)
    2 subwoofer line outputs
    multiple sub crossover choices (ie 20, 40, 60, 80 , 100 etc)
    hi freq component video switching

I have had the 8000 for 5 months, since the first of May.
    Paul Clarke,
I don't see the AVR8000 listed on the page your link goes to.
    JohnDW,
"does it have lip synch (all channel delay)"
No, but with Digital/HD cable, DST3000 OTA HD box and DVD I haven't experienced any lip sync problems other than the networks sync problems.
    "12 v triggers"
    Yes(4)
    Amplifier Trigger Jack
    Multizone IR Input
    Remote IR Input
    Remote IR Output
    "rs232"
    No
    "assignable inputs"
    Yes
    3 Coaxial
    3 Optical
1 either Optical Or Coaxial in front
"bass management (all channels, analog AND digital?)"
Yes(1 chosen option includes all channels)
    "2 subwoofer line outputs"
    Yes but Only 1
    "multiple sub crossover choices (ie 20, 40, 60, 80 , 100 etc)"
    Again yes 40, 60, 80, 100
    "hi freq component video switching"
    10 to 30Mhz
    Hope that helps.

    Thanks Daryl-

I'm not sure I'd consider video switching at 10-30 Hz particularly high bandwidth, but other than that, and no upgradeability, looks well featured ans could serve as an effective prepro-
how is the sound and power (rated a little lower in watts than its denon, pioneer, onkyo competiton, and only 5 channels vs seven) I'm concerned the amp may not put out enough current

    Daryl,
You mean the Crutchfield link? Works for me every single time...just got through checking it again. What browser are you using? Maybe it's because of pre-existent cookies.
Just got to www.crutchfield.com and work your way to the receivers.

Relatively speaking, anyone know how old this receiver is? I thought it had been released a while, but most mags don't review older eqp. ??

Kevin, I think H/K started shipping AVR8000 around February-March 2002. So it's not that old.

I dunno about you guys but I would take this one over any Japanese receiver. On the power front, it would outdo all of the above I would imagine. Look at the internal shots.

I would also like the NAD T762 which is like this AVR8000 in features but not price.

Anton- what internal pictures are you referring to ? re power, one would think with only 5 channels they could beef it up, but specs(110 watts all 5 ch driven @8ohms) are less than competitors (denon 5803 = 170 watts, onkyo 989=120 watts, Pioneer 49tx 120 watts (although one of the mag reviews found it to bench out at >140 watts)....

John, it was nmot me who referred to internal pictures.

AVR8000 has pretty good amps. H/K dos not play games with specs, it's true 110 watts with all channels driven, and even that spec is probably very conservative. Look at the Denon 5803 wattage at thir site, they state 200w/ch into... 6 ohms. Onky also plays with numbers.

Saying that, I found that the AVR8000 internal maps were not able to drive my Studio 100s adequately. Addition of external amp made quite a bit of difference.

    Paul Clarke,

The link in your first post was the link I refered to not listing the AVR8000 on it, not the Crutchfield link.

    JohnDW,

I think the power is fine. I drive 4 Ohm M&K's in front, 4 Ohm THX Altec Lansing dipoles as the side surrounds and I calibrate using VE to 75db at 0 reference level and it has plenty of power. I never have to turn the volume up to reference 0 to get loud sound. The sound is fantastic to me. I had a 7 year old H/K AVR80MKII THX DPL receiver that I upgraded from in January to an Integra DTR-7.2. It just din't have the richness is the sound like the H/K's nor the ooomph in the power. So after 3 months I sold the Integra and got the AVR8000 and my ooomph and richness is back. In sound and power the AVR8000 clearly outperforms the Integra DTR-7.2(Onkyo's upper level equivilant to the Onkyo TX-DS797).

As to H/K's power compared to Denon, Yammy, Marantz or Pioneer I can't say because I don't truly know their specs of watts, ohms or high current capability nor how the derive their specs. But the AVR8000's +/-85 Amps is pleny enough to produce peakes in audio like explosions effortlessly for me and my speakers. Like AntonS said, H/K has always been conservitive with their specs listings.
