a little sensationalism with the title, i expected him to get his ass kicked by another human. although i suppose one would make the argument that he was, since humans developed the machine.

does anyone else find this embarassing for the makers of the computer? they build this multimillion dollar machine, and it's playing against ONE really good human, and it doesnt even win 100% of the time?

What's unusual about this particular match (Kasparov has played against IBM's Big Blue) is that it's the first time a human has lost to a PC and not a multi-billion piece of iron. In these matches, the program has a tendency to 'prefer' positions that are more open rather than more closed, positional types. Its ability to more accurately evaluate the former rather than the latter is largely responsible for the edge that machines have over humans.
