I missed seeing it in the theaters and I have read several reviews here and there but I still want to know if anyone would recomend this film. It's due out on DVD next Tuesday. As far as I know, it has something to do (minorly) with the film American Psycho, which is one of my favorite films. Any suggestions?

Rules Of Attraction was what I call a worthy failure. You have to give director Roger Avery credit for daring - there were quite a few brilliant moments - but seen as a whole the film is a mess.

I'll probably pick this up as I know what I'm getting into and it sounds like it has interesting extras, but I would really recommend a rental over a blind purchase on this one.

I saw it, and would recommend the rental approach as well.

I agree with Craig on this. The movie has good moments but like he said as a whole it just wasn't pulled off very well.

Rules of Attraction is one of those movies that fails for many reasons -- the main one being that it can't seem to get over how pleased it is with itself.

Take that for what it's worth. [IMG]

    Rent first.

It's also got a bit of fractured narrative that doesn't serve much of a purpose. And then there's the issue that there isn't a likable character in the film. Granted...there shouldn't be, but it's still hard to be pleased with a film that you can't relate to.

I'm picking it up SU on Tuesday. Last film that had any hint of "racy" content I saw at theaters was Wild Things, and the audience (of kids) ruined any chance to watch the film in peace. Rules seems to be in the same boat as far as what audiences would have packed theaters, so I've been waiting.

I've seen some good reviews and a high level of praise for the acting. I figure I have at least a two thirds chance of liking the flick at least a little.

It was cut using Apple's Final Cut Pro.

    grin.

    I wouldn't buy it.

Well, I for one will be buying it. Rules was one of my favorites of 2002. Cheap shot at Final Cut Pro. The film looked pretty damn good to me, and it used a lot of innovative techniques as well.

If you can't appreciate this film, well, it's your loss.

I apologize, I misinterpreted your post.

I thought you were implying that because it was edited on Final Cut Pro, that people shouldn't buy it.

I loved this film and will be picking it up tuesday. My only gripe is it isnt the unrated cut that was hinted at. If you really love groundbreaking movies it may be worth picking up even if in the end you do not like the movie as a whole. The hyper speed Europe trip and the split camera trick to me alone make this worth buying.

An unrcut version is being released outside the US. Whether this makes it a better film is another thing.

Director Roger Avary's website (avary.com) hints that an Unrated edition (with, according to the journal area, a 5.1 soundtrack w/"phantom Mono-SR") is a possibility in the future. It does also state that the unrated edition is only 22 seconds longer, so that isn't much.

I agree on just a rental. I watched this for the first time tonight on disc. I'm interested in the book cause the movie is a mess. The disc is nicely produced but the master used has some problems as in some scenes suffering from print scratches. Soundwise only 2.0 surround is included. I made up for it by watching Less Than Zero though later on. Much better.

Does anyone know what those 22 seconds of unrated material contained?
