Time is of the essence on this one.

I ordered a Samsung DLP for general use (TV, HDTV, SD-DVD), but mainly for HD DVD. The set has a maximum resolution of 720p. Is this a smart move? The price was unbeatable, and a 1080p set is out of my price range right now. I am currently using a 3-year-old 1080i CRT RPTV, and I think the HD-A1 looks incredible. I know 1080p is the way to go for future-proofing, but would this set be a complete waste?

I would say it depends on the screen size. The smaller the screen, the less the need for 1080p (although, clearly, 1080p is the future-proof investment). I would definitely look for 1080p on sets 50-inches on up.
