A friend just asked for my advice on buying a new TV to take advantage of 18 month 0% financing at BestBuy. He says he wants a widescreen RP/HDTV for under $2,000. The models I suggested were:
    Toshiba 50H82
    Toshiba 42H81
    Panasonic PT-53WX42
I have never owned a rear projection TV before. I warned him that he has to properly set contrast and brightness and I offered to calibrate his new set with AVIA.
Any thoughts on the models listed above or other suggestions?

either the toshiba 50h82 or the panny 53wx42. those were the same two i was looking at and i opted for the panasonic.

you might want to put the sony 51hw40 on your list, too. it's last year's model but it's still a good TV.

The sony 51ws500 is newer model than the 51hw40 and should be available soon. It has DVI/HDCP if that's a concern. It also does 480p natively.

IT looks like the Sony may be just beyond his budget. The new 51ws500 won't be out until October and then for about $2,700, according to SOny and Hometheatermag.com.
It looks like the Toshiba and Panasonic models need a closer look.

The stores I've spoken to expect to get the 51ws500 within the next couple weeks and to sell for around $2,200.

I bought the Toshiba 42H81 and love it, but for last year's model Best Buy's "closeout" price seems a bit high.

I'd also recommend either of the other two sets, from what I've read here and elsewhere. I'd say it really comes down to what will fit in his room, since either set will give him outstanding performance.
