We take a detour from The Women of Route 66 …

In Memory of

Michael Parks April 24, 1940 — May 9, 2017

Today would have been Michael Parks 82nd birthday. In tribute throughout the day I will be posting photo-video essays featuring some of his memorable television performances.

Route 66 (1960-1964)
Stars Martin Milner George Maharis Glenn Corbett

Perhaps the very most haunting episode of Route 66 and not an easy watch. Michael Parks gives a stunning performance as prize-fighter Henry Frank. A disturbing look at one man’s struggle with illiteracy and his bout with alcoholism.

I’m extremely grateful to own this series. Some of the very greatest actors of the era make guest appearances. However, within a few moments of watching just about any episode you will feel as though you are loosing a grip on reality almost as fast as the actors in the storylines will. This one stars Michael Parks as a hospital intern showing signs of a mental breakdown. Though it is being presented as a tribute to him, a young 20-year old Brenda Scott portraying a girl regressing to a childlike state absolutely steals the show. Watch now and you will see. But beware as you might lose your mind.

Newspaper reporter Jim Bronson (Michael Parks) quits his job and travels across America. Similar in nature to Route 66 though with travel via his Harley-Davidson Sportster, it tells of heartfelt, sensitive, comical, and dramatic interactions between the people he meets throughout his travels. His positive influence on those people is what makes the stories so very enjoyable. The location shooting in Jackson, Wyoming is exquisite. Bonnie Bedelia who looks like Brenda Vacarro and sounds like Joanna Pettet is just lovely and adorable in her role as the immature pampered young girl headed for a crash course in growing up. A lovely, sweet, romantic and exciting adventure that for me never gets outdated.

If you’ve never seen Then Came Bronson I recommend that you don’t watch the following clips.

Wow talk about a shock. I got my complete series set today for Route 66 (Shout Factory) and I thought for sure I read that Shout did season 1 as 1.33:1 but I guess it is just the crappy 16:9 widescreen formatted version.

I have looked all over the net and some people mention the 16:9 widescreen but they seem to believe it was only on part of the infinity DVD releases, I don't seem to read any complaining about Season 1 in widescreen for the Shout Factory releases.

Have there been any season 1 DVD releases that show it in 4:3? All the news listings even on tvshowsonDVD don't even mention any bad news regarding the aspect ratio for the old Infinity S1 releases. Same with the Amazon reviews no one seems to say much about aspect ratios. One person on the Shout release under someone else's review stated the SHOUT S1 at least had the episodes in 4:3 but that is incorrect because my set is 16:9.

Did I just get a bad SHOUT factory set?
Amazon, I've noticed, add reviews to earlier editions...like a new BD release, and They're discussing the DVD and not the BD edition...So take it with a grain of salt and go to other sources for reviews on new releases...

Beautiful tribute to Michael Parks with some spectacular screen caps, Neal!

You should perhaps upload some of these great caps to the appropriate IMDB pages. I've done it myself and have found it relatively easy, with their curators approving them within 16 hours or so. There's some work involved though if you 'tag' the actors in depth as well as the episode or movie title itself. And of course, it involves our well known anxiety in culling the caps down to the best ones...you want to enjoy the process and not feel like you've got a job again, ha, ha...

After watching these, don't you wish that Michael Parks had become George Maharis' permanent replacement in season three? He definitely had a 'James Dean charisma' about him. I know we've talked about this before...the possible or likely actors that Herbert B. Leonard (who really tried to accommodate the mercurial Maharis) could have auditioned in October-November 1962...many of whom had already appeared on Route 66 or Naked City...of course, some of the best were tied up on other TV shows as regulars (Burt Reynolds with Gunsmoke, Bruce Dern with Stoney Burke, Chad Everett with The Dakotas, Rip Torn with the Oscar winning Paul Newman movie Sweet Bird of Youth)...Robert Redford had turned off Herbert B. Leonard, Stirling Silliphant and Sam Manners with his shrill shouting while furiously emoting a dramatic scene (as we are told) during the original January 1960 auditions before the first episode (Black November) was filmed at Concord Kentucky, standing in for Mississippi...you would have thought that guys like Burt Brinkerhoff, Jeremy Slate, John Ericson (later of Honey West), Lee Kinsolving, Keir Dullea, Martin Sheen, Peter Fonda, Gary Cockrell etc., would have had a passing thought...guys like Robert Duvall or Larry Blyden (or Soupy Sales or Don Rickles ha, ha!) would have been too unconventional for 1963...other good looking guys (and some very good actors) like Alejandro Rey, Nico Minardos, Robert Drivas and James Farentino deemed to be too 'ethnic'...IMHO, Glenn Corbett was quite good in some episodes, but mostly turned in a series of inappropriately inert performances that leave me wanting to punch him in the face...if Michael Parks, who was very busy during this period appearing on Eleventh Hour (as you beautifully illustrated), Target the Corruptors, Gunsmoke, Wagon Train, Stoney Burke, Sam Benedict, Gallant Men, Perry Mason, 77 Sunset Strip, Ben Casey and two episodes of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, couldn't have committed to Route 66 because of these other obligations, I would have nominated JAMES CAAN...
