Hi all, I've heard that logic 7 is one of the best available for '"7.1" decoding. Has anyone compared this to Rotels 7.1 decoding? Any thoughts on either?

    Cheers Josh

7.1 decoding? I think the Rotel uses standard non-THX
decoding for ES DTS or EX DD sources so the decoding is
6.1 with the ability to plug in another speaker to make
it 7.1. But the two rear speakers are monophonic, not
THX de-correlated or different in any way. The 7th speaker
is just to provide more "fill" in the rear of a larger home theater. Or if you have something like two chairs, you
could put a rear speaker behind both.
Logic 7, THX-Ultra 2 both provide a kind of differential
to the rear channel to split it into two, without any
    real directionality.
It's just to fool your ears into thinking there are two
    separate channels instead of one.

The Rotel XS processing is enagaged as soon as you tell it you have 6 or 7 speakers. Once engaged it will try its best to utilize all the speakers you have for any 5.1 format or PLII and DTS:NEO. I don't really know how well it compares to Logic7 for steering etc but its similar in functionality.
