I just bought an RMB-1066 (5 x 70W) but I am considering stepping up to the 1075 (5 x 120W). At the time I bought the 1066 I was unaware that the 1075 had just had a $200 price drop. I could probably trade up to the 1075 for another $300.

For those who have heard both do you think there's a big diference in sound quality?

I am powering Paradigm Studio's all around- 60's, 40's and CC.

John,
Just my 2c... I have a 1075 that I'm very happy with. I would think the extra $300 may be worth it just to give yor speakers a little more headroom in terms of power.

just an addendum...when and where did you buy your RMB-1066? authorized dealer? it's downright outrageous they didn't mention the price reduction.

Stephen,

I did buy it at an authorized dealer. The 1075 was still marked as 1199.00. Don't know if they just "forgot" to put the new $999 price up or if they were actively trying to screw people! I think it's the former because this dealer seems like a pretty good guy.

My understanding is that the 1075 has been $999 for quite a while - at least a few months. Initially, I thought you meant that the 1075 was now going for $799.

I have not purchased one, but I was checking them out last Spring, when I was expecting to need one for an Outlaw 950. Instead, I got a Rotel RSX-1055 in silver a couple of weeks ago. It rocks!

Jack,

How much did you pay for the 1055? I heard one a couple weeks ago and loved it. IMO-it blows away other receivers in its price class.

3db from one to the other is a considerable gain in terms of headroom. You'd get better control, dynamics, and slightly better low level resolution. I'd say go with the 1075.

My 2 cents.

I bought my RMB-1075 3-4 months ago and it was priced at $999.00 then, and the dealer had no problem dropping to 900.00.

Sounds great with Studio 40's.

If the 1075 just dropped in price then I would assume that the 1066 has dropped also. Before you jump on the 1075 bandwagon I would e-mail Rotel and get the specs of both(torroidal size, caps, output devices) to see if there is a big difference. There maybe a differnce in wattage but if there isn't big difference in the other specs then sound wise, dynamics, etc may not be that different. I know the 1066 specs as follows:

Toroidal transformer is rated for .500 KVA.
Six supply capacitors each rated at 6,800 uf.
To bipolar output devices per channel each rated at 15 A.

Your $300 maybe better spent on something else though I'm sure the 1075 sounds awesome. See if your dealer will let you take it home and demo it side by side.

Here's a brief comparison:
1066
60 X 6 or 70 X 5
.500 KVa toroidal trans.
6 capacitors @ 6,800 uf
12 output devices @ 15A
Damping factor 150
29.75 lbs
1075
120 X 5 THX cert.
Rotel made 1,500 VA toroidal trans
8 British made slit foil
capacitors @ 10,000 uf
20 output devices @ 15A
Damping factor 180
37.4 lbs.
If there is only a couple hundred difference, then the 1075 looks pretty good. I can't attest to the actual sound difference

I bought my 1075 at $1199 with 10% discount at my local dealer about 2 months ago. I even showed Rotel website's pricelist with $999, but didn't help. They have a price match policy with other dealers in the area, but the problem is they're the only dealer carrying Rotel in my area... Anyway, I'm happy with 1075, so it eases the pain of paying $200 extra living in a sucky town.

Hey John Dunlap,

I paid $1195 for the RSX1055 receiver (MSRP is $1299). The first dealer I talked to would not discount. The second did. I was not sure if dealers would discount the 1055 since it was brand new, but I guess it was an easy sale for him - I came in knowing what I wanted.

I purchased the 1066 planning to bridge it for 3 channel use. I'm not very fond of it's sound when bridged. It's base response gets very loose and flabby, which I would assume is cuased by a current limitation when configured in this manner. I'm now wishing that I had paid the extra for the 1075 and had two channels available for future use or bi-amping.

Can you trade up now, Greg? Tweeters and some other stores offer 120 day tradeup policy where you can upgrade to another component of higher price and get full credit for the lower gear. See if thats an option and get the 1075.

Yogi,
Thanks for the tip, but it was a special order and they view that as "all sales final". Perhaps I'll Ebay it if it realy starts to bother me enough to take a hit on it.
