I'm looking for a tool to encode MP3 files. I've heard almost nothing but good things about LAME, but when I went to download it from download.com I noticed it had a user rating of only 50%, and many of the user comments complained about adware, spyware, and other such junk.

I don't want to install this program on my computer if it's going to cause problems. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Chris is giving you good advice. You should use the stand alone command line LAME encoder with Razorlame as a frontend GUI, or use LAME as an external plugin with EAC or CDex.

I use exactaudiocopy for ripping CDs (the BEST ripper out there), and it comes bundled with LAME (command-line) and Razorlame (GUI). No spyware.

No, it does not, nor should it. LAME (the command-line version) is updated at Hydrogen Audio fairly frequently; more frequently than Exact Audio Copy. If you download Exact Audio Copy from it's homepage you will not find LAME or Razorlame bundled with it.
