Sound bars aren't evil (for reference, Bose and Monster are evil!), and you'll get decent sound from them. But unless you are constrained by something specific you will get more from the 5.1 setup. And I do think you'll be able to tell the difference.

And by constrainted, I mean you don't want to or can't run wires, your room is small, or unusually shaped. At 12x16, your room is large enough to take advantage of a standard set-up.

Also, that particular soundbar is expensive, so you're definitely not saving money. Plus, even with the sound bar, you'll probably want a subwoofer; so figure that into the price.

I don't have any direct experience with either the Denon or the Yamaha, but both are good brands.

Bose on the other hand is not - it's average at best and priced as premium. So yes, return the Bose.

In picking between the Denon and Yamaha, I'd probably start with features. What do each have and what do you need? (# of HDMI connections is a good place to start. Auto tuning is another.) As for the speakers, there's no better approach than trying to listen to them at a store. Given two sets of good speakers, one will likely sound better to you, and that's what matters most. Try to use the same source when you compare; if you can't try and keep the volumes as close as possible.
