Declan, if you're curious about specific titles, posting a thread called "How is the Cool As Ice LD?"* will probably draw some LaserPhiles out of the woodwork to offer opinions.
In a similar vein, does anyone know of any good LD review archives out there?
*for the record, the LaserDisc of Cool As Ice is fairly mediocre: oversaturated, unnatural looking colour, significant video noise, and a full frame transfer are all negative points. On the plus side, the PCM Ultra Stereo soundtrack is fairly directional, and has strong, clear bass during the musical sequences. Video: 2/5. Audio: 3/5. Overall: a bargain at $0.99 during Ken Cranes' LD blowout sale last fall, I bought several -- some to give to friends as gifts, and some to use as serving platters at dinner.

DVDLaser is pretty good, as far as the sheer number of reviews goes. Unfortunately, it isn't as technical as I'd like, but it is a good way to see the specs and features and which versions of films are the best.

Apparently, they had so many copies at Ken Cranes that they were stuffing them in with other discs as freebies, even if you didn't order it.
I remember (back in the old days) trying to buy the rental copy of Cool As Ice from my local LD rental shop, and the guy refused to sell it to me because it was always rented out.
He said that it was easily the most profitable LD in the store.

why not? laserdisc titles are dirt cheap now. They offer in many cases superior audio to their dvd counterparts, and countless titles unavaliable on dvd. Also, play them side by side on a non-digital TV and on a decently mastered LD you won't be able to tell any difference in image quality. On a progressive-scan display maybe, but not on a standard TV.

COOL AS ICE is especially precious to Canadian LD collectors because the film never received a theatrical release in Canada.

Getting back to the original topic, didn't someone review the PHANTOM MENACE laserdisc on this site when it as released ?

    Chris,

sorry but you are talking rubbish. DVD looks better than Ld in any context! As for the sound why did you come to that conclusion?

Have you ever listend to an LD, Lee. Uncompressed PCM will beat DD 2.0 any day of the week...and can even trounce a 5.1 track every now and again.

And DVDs don't always look better "in any context" ... I have a few nice LDs that look the same as their (non-anamorphic) DVD counterpart on my 27" Wega.

    Matt,

I believe the comment made by Chris was 'offers in many cases better audio than dvd' which i took as meaning sounds better than dvd full stop. That is simply not the case.

Even on my 53" HDTV, there are certainly some laserdiscs that match the same title on DVD (typically poorly encoded DVDs). In fact, I can name at least one series (Oh My Goddess) where the laserdiscs looks notably better than the DVDs.

And sound on many, many LDs trounce the respective DVD.

And there are many, many titles on LD that are not on DVD.

    And most laserdiscs are cheap.

Why do LD bashers always drop into these threads with their sniping? Trying to compensate for something? Having a bad day?

This is as tiresome as what happens to every D-VHS thread.

This is an LD discussion thread, not an LD-versus-DVD debate thread.
