Which one is paid for, the stars or the hand prints in the sidewalks? I always forget which one is useless and which one might be kinda cool.

    He deserves it!

I always like his reviews, even those I don't agree with. He invariably gives some food for thought about the movie he reviews and, furthermore, he has done a lot for the film as a form of art in general.

    Congratulations, mr. Ebert!

If stars were given out for personality (kindness, generosity, humility), Mr. Ebert would probably not be given a star. But, although he does not write with the intellectual prowess of Pauline Kael, Ebert does know how to connect with his readers and is very good at touching upon defining moments in his reviews, honing in on characters and plots and actions that we can all identify with. He uses anecodotes from his own earlier moviegoing and growing-up experiences to explain the reasons for his reactions to certain films, which even Kael did not do that I am aware of. I agree he deserves the accolades, and I do hope he is currently in good health. If he could begin to appreciate his underlings more, and get off his high self-righteous horse, he might even earn a bit of genuine (as opposed to superficial) respect.

as Clint Eastwood once said in a movie, "deserve's got nothing to do with it"

RYAN SEACREST has a star on the walk of fame. (link to thread

Indeed not - his intellectual prowess is considerably higher. RE writes in a simple, direct manner. Any fool can use fancy long words and drop in quotations and references, but it takes real skill to write so that everyone can understand. I'd urge you to look again at RE's columns and see how he brings a whole world of knowledge into a few simple and apparently homespun phrases. Underneath the apparently simple exterior is a very considerable intelligence.

Also, even when I've disagreed with RE's verdict on a movie, I've been left with an understanding of why he feels differently. On the other hand, even when I agreed with Kael's verdict on a film, I still thought she was arrogant, prejudiced and waspish.

    Hear hear!

I totally agree with andrew, and only partly with Dick. Well said, andrew, and never have I noticed a high horse in RE's neighbourhood.

I guess star ratings really are meaningless.

On the plus side, RE's star is located next to the El Capitain and across the street from the Kodak Theater. Some recipients were unfortunate to see their star laid next to sex shops and porno mag retailers.

I'm afraid to ask where Seacrest's star is located. [IMG]

I was just thinking about this. Though I don't always care for Ebert, I'd MUCH rather see someone like him on there who's had a longer and distinguished career.

    Congrats.
