Blu-ray contnues to come out with disappointing titles. WHY don't they make a greater effort to give topnotch PQ? You'd think they'd have a clue that they NEED to make a good impression when initiating a new format, especially with a competing new format. Instead, they give us this. WHY?

Another title scratched off my "buy" list. This was one of the titles I was really looking forward to, BD needs to get its act together soon.

I'm still baffled as to why Sony keeps releasing only R-rated versions on Blu-ray of movies that are available in unrated editions elsewhere. Did they sign a secret "no smut" deal with Focus on the Family or something?

to be fair, these first several waves have probably been in the pipe for a while. Its not like they are continuing to make new inferior transfers- and if they are, we won't know until 4 or 5 months from now, I would guess.

What we can divine is that Sony and MGM picked an initally level of quality to themselves that was acceptable, and Robocop, and TFE, and HOFD are all examples of it.
If they heed the backlash, we'll start to see evidence several months from now.
If they don't care and think the PS3 will even everything out anyway, we'll know that too- but neither will be able to be called right away.

about the only thing Robocop proves is that people should wait to hear some feedback on MGM catalog titles before they lay money down.

oh- it proves one other thing- 'studio exclusivity' doens't mean jack if the titles you want from them are produced in a disinterested & careless fashion.

It remains to be seen whether this is the an early mis-direction or a s.o.p.

The 1.66:1 AR was cropped to 1.85:1 too, suprised the reviewer didn't mention that.

Even being a Sony-hater, this is one title that would 'win' me over.
However, this is not the transfer to do it.

There are no excuses for this.
CC has set the standard for this title for home video release.
The last MGM SD DVD even added something, with an anamorphic transfer, abet with different framing.
If this was the first time release for a catalog title, maybe one could say; give them time.
Yet, this is what, the fourth video disc release of this beloved film and to not improve on all previous versions is clearly a step backward.

I like the film, have enjoyed it in the past & was looking forward to the HD released, however I really feel bad for fans of Robocop.

Don't cry for me Argentina, I'll just watch the upconverted DVD.

This was going to be the killer app--the one title that made me put a Blu Ray player on my short list.

    Not anymore.

The more I keep hearing about these setbacks with Blu-Ray
hardware and the shoddy attention being given to its releases,
the more happy I am that I abstained from a purchase.

Ron, I'm with you on that! I've had a Sony BD player on pre-order since May, but I just cancelled it last week. While I think in time BD will be a better format, I don't think that will be at least until the 2G players. Hopefully, the prices will drop by then.

Sony had to know that RoboCop would be one of the films that would tip SOME people into BR. Why in the world did they screw it up?

I agree. It's really ashame a brand new format like this is looking so badly.

You gotta wonder, what's in Sony's mind when they release sub standard DVDs especially like this one. Granted, these prior releases may have already been in the pipeline, but reading everything so far about BD, that's one pipeline they need to shut down like BP oil (political analogy). For those not release yet, but manufactured, don't release them and fix the darn problem which could be a master problem or hardware problem. These releases are frustrating and continues to place a bad taste in everyone's mouth.

Another lackluster Blu-Ray title... whodda thunk it?

I keep seeing the advertisments for Blu-Ray with the slogan "ExperienceBlu".
Well I did, and the experience blew.

There's debate about that. It was projected 1.85 in the States, 1.66 in Europe. I believe Verhoven prefers 1.66 but he had to have known that most people would see it at 1.85. It's the Stanley Kubrick argument all over again.
