I remember reading a while ago that Criterion was considering re-releasing the Robocop Criterion with a cleaned up transfer (like that of the single disc edition made by MGM, I think). On Criterion's website there is a link to ask a question to resident expert Jon Mulvaney.

I asked, "I heard you guys were going to be re-releasing this with a new picture transfer. Is this true?"

    The sad reply came back...

    Dear Adam,

I'm afraid we have no plans to do so at this time.

    Thanks,

    JM

Oh well. Let's pray for the future.

They no longer have the rights to release this title- so they'd have to renegotiate the film rights with MGM- which I would seriously doubt will happen.

I was just saying I "heard". I could have heard from a friend who heard from a friend. I wasn't making any legitimate claims that I heard this from some studio exec. "At no point"? Are you a Criterion employee?

So, I asked a question. Sue me. If I remember correctly, I read it somewhere in the HTF. Calm down, man.

I think MGM is releasing this with a new transfer and the extra Criterion material by the end of the year

Let's see. The title of your thread is Robocop Criterion Re-Release immediately leading anyone to believe that you may have valid information on the subject. But what really was included was a rumor that you seem to have made up, no backing from any source, no question mark, nothing at all. So, I read through the thread and decided that you and others would appreciate the truth on the matter.

Guess what, I saw a few of these last week in my local Media Play. I know it was the Criterion, cuz I thought to myself "isn't this OOP."

I know it can be found, I just heard the picture transfer was inferior to the MGM barebones one.

To me, the Unrated cut is worth more then an anamorphic print.. Then again, your milage may vary [IMG]

So the only difference was anamorphic or non-anamorphic? The picture quality is good?

Finally found what I was looking for!
    From DVDFILE:
    Referring to the MGM edition...
"This anamorphic MGM release is the shorter, theatrical version, with a special edition of the longer cut due out next year from MGM."
    http://www.dvdfile.com/software/revi...4/robocop.html
So there IS going to be a special edition. Sweet.

It'll almost certainly be similar to the R2 and R4 special editions, with a commentary, deleted scenes, documentaries, trailers, not-quite-seamless branching, etc. There's plenty of threads about this release already.

I would expect it to be late this year, similar to the Terminator SE release last year.
