It's been a long time, but I went to grad school at Hopkins and frequented the Charles often. I don't remember it being a great theater or anything, but it was a good art house and I saw a lot of movies I hadn't seen before (even though I don't like many of them, I was glad to be exposed to them).

I actually saw Vertigo when I was at grad school, but I don't think it was at the Charles (I think it was at Hopkins), but this predated the restoration (mid to late 80s), so it wasn't a great print, but it was my first introduction to Vertigo.

The Charles isn't a great theater, but like you said, they do have a nice slate of art house films. I was privileged enough to see Vertigo here at the now defunct Fine Arts Theatre. It was also the first time I'd ever seen the film. What a magnificent piece of work.
