RIP. Great character actor. Full Metal Jacket owes its success to his performance in my opinion. Better than Lou Gosset in Officer And A Gentleman (and he was great too). .
Very sad to hear of his passing. His numerous good performances are, in my humble opinion, dwarfed by the powerhouse performance he gave in Full Metal Jacket!
Deepest condolences to his family, friends and fans (count me in!) RIP in Mr Ermey
Couldn't sleep and was browsing the web. Came across a notice of Ermey's passing. He was a unique presence and will be missed.
Aside #1 - I've been a fan of The Siege of Firebase Gloria since I took a chance on a theatrical viewing. There are several factors that play into my appreciation of the film and Ermey's character is one of those reasons.
Aside #2 - I remember revisiting Apocalypse Now years after viewings of Full Metal Jacket and being surprised to hear Ermey's voice and seeing him very briefly on screen as one of the helicopter pilots (in an uncredited appearance) during the attack on the coastal village (RIde of the Valkyries).
Was just thinking about him yesterday while watching Good Morning Vietnam. He and J.T. Walsh brought IT with intensity never seen before. That stuff ain't like Gomer and Sgt Carter! Made me glad mom shooood away the recruiters when I was young and impressionable. Even the navy guy in his Popeye suit was sent packing!
