Joe Ranft, the animation story artist who is also well known for providing the voices of Heimlich the caterpillar from "A Bug's Life" and Wheezy from "Toy Story 2", died in an auto accident this past Tuesday. [IMG]

I read that he was only 45. At least he was able to do a lot in his life and contributed to so many wonderful movies with his ideas and his voice. I really think that his Heimlich voice in "A Bug's Life" is one of the funniest voice actor turns in animation. And the tribute on the Ain't It Cool News site gives him credit for turning around "The Emperor's New Groove" for Disney when the project seemed doomed.

No fucking way! R.I.P. indeed. Heimlich was my favorite character in A Bug's Life.

At about the age of 27 Joe was the directing animator on The Brave Little Toaster...one of my favorite films.
His passing at 45 is a great loss.

Oh no! I LOVE Heimlich and especially the performance he gives on the CE of Bugs Life when he is presenting a scene. (at the circus?)

    Sad sad sad.

It was always obvious to me that The Brave Little Toaster was an early version of Toy Story, but I did not know the connection. Now I do, it was John Lasseter and Joe Ranft.

Yikes! It's Some Like It Hot all over again.
At least 5 members of TBLT cast have died and all but
Thurl Ravenscroft were premature. Thurl (Kirby) lived to be 91.

I did not know of Joe's passing and I was shocked when I saw this in Time Magazine yesterday. It was always a treat to watch the credits in any Pixar film and see how many different ways he contributed. So hugely talented.

Its just so sad. Very, very, sad.

I am going to look like an idiot the next time I go to Disneyland with my daughter and ride Heimlich's Chew Chew train. Daddy, what's wrong with your eyes?

I found this link with some information on his passing:
