One of the guiding lights of cinéma vérité has passed away at 94. It's hard to overstate the impact his work has had on mass culture. Documentary filmmaking was forever changed by his contributions. Reality TV as we know it, for good or ill, wouldn't exist without his movies as a forerunner.

When we think of the sixties counterculture, so much of our collective cultural memory has been shaped by his lens. Dont Look Back is one of the all time great music documentaries, and Monterey Pop is one of the all time great concert films.

Rest in peace. I especially love his Original Cast Album: Company. Such a great document. Shame there weren't more to follow.

His Company was a game-changer, for sure. It had a huge influence on me.

Chris Elliott used to send it up all the time back on the old Letterman Late Night show on NBC. He had a lot of fun with it.

I think Don't Look Back was the first DVD that I ever ordered online.
