I’m hoping for new doorbell options in the next year after Apple gets its home devices storage features working. I’m getting less happy about owning a Ring.

Why don't we see this thread at the top of AH when a new post is made?

Cause somebody moved it to some dumb new home automation forum. I have no idea who and I disagree with it...

If there was a deal that allowed Amazon to give footage without a court order or my permission to law enforcement I would have a problem with that (and would replace the cameras with a local DVR system). I don't have a problem giving law enforcement the ability to ask for footage from my camera and let me decide if I want to provide it. Having said that I wouldn't feel comfortable with Amazon having access to footage from cameras inside my home.

A few weeks ago my neighbor got an alert from the ring camera in her driveway. She looked and saw that there was someone looking through her truck. She called the police and they caught him a few blocks away 30 min later. The responding officer asked if he could see the video just to confirm a positive ID. Later that morning we found out that two other people picked him up in their yards on their ring cameras too.

Did not know all this had been going on...

Guess I'm glad I held off buying their stuff all this time... though that was more because their stuff didn't seem all that great to me based on user reports/reviews on Amazon -- seemed like they needed more refinement, etc...

The Ring Doorbell works well. I'm not a fan of the "scare the user" business model they're taking. But I don't know what I'd replace it with, so I've got it for the time being.

There's a Vice article about the Ring being easily hacked. It's a bit click-baity, in that the lead scare-anecdote shows how easily hacked it is, with the caveat that the "hackers" knew the targets username and password and could log into his account. :/

But the bigger story is solid, discussing how Ring is not doing basic security stuff like checking if the IP address is anywhere near the previous login and 2FA confirmation of new login...and not even supporting 2FA. Basically, Ring blames the user for everything.

They do support 2FA. I enabled it earlier this week after the first few reports came in.

I misread the article on that. They explain Ring has 2FA but doesn’t use it to enhance security by e.g. challenging new or geographically disparate logins.

I don’t know about geographic disparate logins, but when I logged out of my phone and then logged back in it prompted me for 2FA. I think they should require it or at least strongly recommend it (repeatedly). It’s possible it’s something they just rolled out? I refuse to have any internet connected camera inside my home (I make exceptions for those on computers or devices that have either a manual shutter [Amazon Echo] or a laptop where I can add a manual shutter.
