Oh no. What a legend. Shaft was one of the earliest strong, proud black characters in film. I was glad to see him reprise the role in the recent Shaft movie with Samuel L. Jackson and Usher (2019). Roundtree was the definition of cool for a generation of fans.

RIP.

The opening to his film shaft is the epitome of black cinema in the 70s. Nothing is cooler than seeing a brother walk in traffic like he owns the whole street while in the background you have Issac Hayes score. This is unfortunate (his passing) but something did strike me funny re-watching the trailer to shaft... I did have to "ask my mama" to see this movie when I was a kid. Surprisingly she said yes, but I learned she had a huge crush on Mr Roundtree so it was a excuse for her to see it again basically. Had a cousin who was a prop man and said when he worked on a different world Mr Roundtree was a complete gentleman. Rest in peace sir

I saw the Shaft movies when they first came out, and enjoyed them (even the, admittedly lesser, third one). Always had respect for Roundtree. And like Sam, I was happy to see him appear in both of the Sam Jackson Shaft films. And his occasional appearances in Chicago Fire as Chief Boden's father.

Outside of his movie career, I had respect for him as a survivor of male breast cancer, which he had back in the 90s, before I knew it was even a thing. Not surprisingly, he kept quiet about it as he was concerned it would affect his career. But some time after I'd had my first round with male breast cancer, he appeared on one of the afternoon talk shows during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to talk about his encounter with it.
