This will never happen in a million years, or at least in Spielberg's lifetime.

You see, although Universal owns this movie outright and therefore can do anything they want with it, the studio would probably find it unwise to not do a Lucas-type revision of Jaws without Spielberg's approval. Spielberg would say no.

For you see, Spielberg did something similar with E.T. back in 2002. (You know, the version with walkie-talkies instead of guns?) Spielberg later regretted this revised version and has vowed never to do something similar again.

We can breathe easy...for now.

I'd rather see a straight up remake, than simply updating the FX. Fixing the shark still leaves the rest of the film looking like a relic of the 70's. If they want to open it up to a wide audience of young people, they'd need to remake the film.

Either way, the original film would still exist for those that don't want the remake or improved FX.

But as Tino says, everyone in Hollywood seems to live in fear of pissing off Spielberg, so there's no chance of this until he's kicked it.

...or recast the shark with a Shi Tzu who got grampa’s false teeth. The horror!

Fortunately, Spielberg already realized this is a bad idea after doing it to E.T. and is on record as regretting that, so he won't do it again.

Even after he dies, Spielberg's estate, much like Stanley Kubrick's, will probably put all sorts of controls on how his works can and can't be used.

I liked your post, so it seems I agree, except for some actions during the finale when the shark is

chomping through steel like it's wet tissue paper, and swimming backward at times.

But I thought the shark looked very good.

I don't believe Spielberg has any ownership of most of his films, including Jaws, so I don't think he can stipulate how they may be used/modified/remade.

The fact that Universal has not exploited this property is just a courtesy while they're still occasionally working with Spielberg to keep him happy. Once he's dead or retired, they'll do what they want.
