Gilligan was the tragic one: It ended because of studio politics.

Gunsmoke fans (including CBS founder Bill Paley) might disagree that it was tragic. Not taking sides, but Gunsmoke's renewal and day/time change catapulted it back into the top ten for the next six years. It's one of (if not the) all time great comebacks in TV history.

Gunsmoke is one show I just have never gotten any interest in.

The only thing I've never seen is The Harlem Globetrotters on GIlligan's Island. Is there any place one can?

So speaking of The Monkees and GIlligan's Island, they were aired opposite each other. Which did you watch?
I did not have to choose. Besides three network channels where I lived, there was also a station that aired shows from both ABC and NBC. They aired The Monkees on Friday nghts, so I watched it then. (That station also aired Time Tunnel at a different time than Fridays and I'd often watch the same episode twice that week.)

What is your favorite Gilligan's Island episode?

Just one? Besides the ones that people often cite as favorites, I've always liked:
S1 Ep. 29 "Three to Get Ready"
S2 Ep. 10 "Hi-Fi Gilligan
S2 Ep. 17 "You've Been Disconnected"
S2 Ep. 23 "Ship Ahoax"
S3 Ep. 13 "And Then There Were None"
S3 Ep. 16 "Take a Dare"
S3 Ep. 29 "Bang! Bang! Bang!"

I can only imagine what the island would have been like when Paul Lynde showed up!

Well... Speaking of that. A couple years ago in the Holiday episodes thread I posted this:

I do wish that Gilligan's Island had a Christmas episode sans the b&w flashback one they nominally did. About 15 years ago, give or take, I wanted to give a Christmas gift to someone I know, but I was short on $ to give out much of any kind of gift to anyone at that time. This person was very much into GIlligan's Island, so I thought it would be a gift he might appreciate if I wrote an episode of GiIligan's Island for him. I made it a Christmas episode obviously. I called it the lost episode of December 19, 1966. On that night Gilligan's Island was either a rerun or pre-empted for a (presumably) holiday special. I'm getting the idea to pull it out and read it again in the next 2-3 days!

What I didn't write is that I had a visitor to the island in this episode named Rudy LaMont which I specifically mentioned was to be played by Paul Lynde. The TV Guide synopsis would be something like this: A nightclub performer hired to entertain at a millionaire's Christmas Eve party on his private island, is mistakenly dropped off with the castaways.

Yeah, only naming one favorite is impossible giving it more thought. Great ones there...especially liked You've Been Disconnected and And Then There Were None.

The Globetrotters film does seem to be hard to find now. I recall it aired here and there on weekends for a few years back in the 80s, but haven't seen it since. In fact I didn't even really watch it then, just briefly stared in amazement at the Globetrotters taking on a team of robots, and then changed the channel. Felt more like an episode of the Globetrotters' cartoon series than a Gilligan's Island episode.

When I watched Gilligan it was running relatively unopposed in syndication. If I had had to choose, I would have gone with the Monkees. If Get Smart or Batman were airing opposite, then it would have been a really tough choice.

I had read on a fan site many years ago that one proposed third season story had Lynde show up on the island using The Castaways as a test audience for a new comedy routine. The deal, of course, was that no one left the island with him until the act was perfected, no matter how "painful" it became!

Being a diehard fan of both Gilligan and Lynde, I'd love to read your treatment if you chose to share it! I'd sign a NDA for security, if necessary. Sounds like a hoot!

Globetrotters is streaming on archive dot org.

I was the Saturday Morning rerun generation (2nd) of Monkee fans, so I got Monkees on weekends with Gilligan on Sunday mornings.

Gilligan, Bewitched, Brady Bunch, Star Trek, The Tom and Jerry Show, Munsters, Addams Family and The Three Stooges were all on weekdays, swapped up on different days. I never had to pick one over the other. Just sit back and enjoy!

And, learn a little. I started playing guitar by copying Nesmith's barre chords. Yes, I started the difficult and painful way by strengthening my index finger and learning how to take the basic chord shapes and changing keys all the way up the fretboard. Who says tv don't teach nothin'??

I am one of those, as well. The color, Festus years were my favorites and the ones I first discovered via evening reruns before Andy Griffith in the 70s. Back then, I didn't know that Gilligan got the can in favor of the Haggen Clan, though.

Also, never saw either show in color until 1979-80, when we finally got a brand-spankin'-new Quasar console color Tv! Then came Atari and ooooweeeeee! Was we kids on top of the world. Video games and Star Trek in color? Gilligan was in color?!! The Price is Right never looked better!

Regarding Gilligan's Island, I always felt Season 1 was written better than the others. I didn't mind black and white (in fact, I liked it) although the appeal of color was all too evident for season 2 and 3 and nice to see. I think Season 2 has the most iconic episodes and my favorite episode is probably The Friendly Physician although Ghost A Go Go is up there with others..

What is your favorite Gilligan's Island episode?
Best episode(s)? The ones with Vito Scotti! Especially the one (Diogenes, Won't You Please Go Home?) where everyone has their own version of how they defeated the Japanese sailor. Scotti's reactions to The Skipper destroying his weapons? "What you do? Ooh, you.. You betta NOT!!" Just hysterical! That guy could play any kind of character to the hilt!

Up At Bat.

This episode had everything I needed as a kid: spooky theme parodying old horror movies, goofy comedy and, when I finally saw it in color, a tangible, claustrophobic texture that, much like the island but much more realistic to me, exists in the back of my mind like an actual experience memory.

Likely because the part of the episode where Gilligan is flying around like an oversized bat on a wire, combined with the tinted glass windows and that woody-sounding church organ leitmotif underscore reminded me so much of the feel, layout, texture and even (I swear) a smell memory (old carpet, wood paneling wall covers, cheap, plastic fake-flower smell) of the church my parents forced us kids to go to for several years. The church was old and spooky on its own to a 5 year old, and I've always been fascinated by stories where people's personality (and critically, their dramatic motives) change for better or worse-- they become something different, taking us out of the norm and onto a whole other plane or tangent.

Good distraction and escapism at its goofiest!

Vito Scotti was great.

I loved Up At Bat. It was definitely hitting on all cylinders. Yeah, wow - I can imagine how that all felt as a kid!

Well...let's see...first I'll have to see/look if I can locate that computer disc (I hope it's a disc, heh!) it's on; that was quite a long time ago. If not I only have a printed copy. Anyway, I'll pm anything further, but when...I don't know. So be patient. ;)

My shipping status is still stuck on "Label Created", which I find a bit odd. Been that way for almost 2 weeks. They're shipping out of Derry, NH according to the tracking info. I sell on Ebay and I don't print labels unless I'm ready to ship something next day, 2 days at most. It's just good business sense.

Timing is everything. A release of this stature is likely stricken by the dreaded Non-Compete legal mumbo-jumbo so you won't get it early and have it outshine the lesser upcoming releases like Ghostbusters Frozen Empire and such.
