I know that there are many places that will take used cell phones for charity, but I'm looking for one that's reputable and doesn't keep much of the money for themselves. I remember reading about one organization that gave the phones to battered women to make emergency calls, but I can't seem to find the info.

I have a couple of phones gathering dust and would like to donate them to someplace worthy such as the one mentioned above. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Steve

how about giving it to someone who might need one in an emergency? they don't need service as 911 can be dialed from any powered cell phone with/without a service contract. they just have to keep it powered up.

Many law enforcement agencies use old cell phones for crime prevention efforts. Our local police gives old phones to paper carriers to report crime in the wee hours as they do their route.

Verizon Wireless has a program that donates the phones to battered women. You just take your old handset into a Verizon store and they should have a drop box for them, at least they do in upstate New York.

Thanks folks. The link that Dave mentioned is the one that I had heard about. Most of the major cell phone companies seem to support them and there are drop-off places all over the U.S.
