Replacing Win 2000 splash screens??

    I want to change the splash screen for startup/shutdown on my windows based htpc... but I know it's a pain for 2000 (I think you actually have to decompile a service/resource, change the bmp flag setting, and recompile the service with the newbitmap included! What ever happened to just replacing logo.sys! LOL!)
    I have never decompiled a service- heck this is my first experience with NT at all-- so I have never used a service. I can find like 2 mentions online of how to do it, and both are horrible:

    i found an app that let me pic any image and set it to my splash screen. just email me if you would like it.
