I like this projector (image wise) for my uses - it's a dark media room onto a big screen, with dedicated "high end" stereo surround. The unit has some issues and I really would like to avoid this expensive bulb replacement (there is a problem with the lamp unit attachment and I've hacked around it for a couple years but I'm very tired of it.) Basically I'm looking for something that would give me the same image quality as this unit, but with LED, or at least cheaper and easier to replace lamps. I have also seen this rainbow flashing that is sometimes mentioned, on older units when I looked around last time, and I definitely want to avoid that. I have read that some newer units that use the same technology can in theory still give this effect, but people are less likely to notice it now.

Can anyone give me some comparable options in the $500-1500 range? Preferably not more than $1000 unless I'm going to get something really incredible for it. I'm not really into the latest and greatest since I use the room mostly for music. Preferably something without built in speakers, or at least not expensive ones, since I don't want to pay for something I won't use. And probably more interested in contrast and blackness more than high luminosity.

Hello Jeff and welcome to HTF!

What projection screen do you have, size, brand, and the fabric if you know it?

I’ve been at CEDIA in Denver, CO and we’re just now on the flight to get back home. Their are some very nice new long throw projectors for you to consider in your price range.

I'll follow up tomorrow with a couple recommendations.

I have a Stewart FireHawk 110". I'm not sure if it's G5 or some other version.

Yes it's light gray, but I wouldn't know about the gain, unless there's a way to find it on the screen somewhere I haven't noticed. I didn't buy it - it came with the house when I bought the house.

Jeff, sorry to put the rush on your making the decision, and hope you read this tonight!

I just came across this very aggressive sale from LG on their HU70LAB 4K Laser Projector for $999.99

It's a very good long throw projector in its price category and the very low sale price that well matches your budget and use case makes this a great choice.

Here's the link where you can see all of the detail and purchase it directly from LG at this crazy low sale price.
