Disney Studios is looking to bring the long-lost 1980s superhero series THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO to the big screen in a big way.

According to DAILY VARIETY, legendary TV producer and owner of the HERO mythos Stephen J. Cannell and the studio Walt built have tapped Paul Hernandez to develop the script for the first big screen outing of a sickly school teacher who becomes a clutzy superhero when aliens bestow on him a suit of immense power. Unfortunately for his heroic fate, the teacher (played by curly haired William Katt) misplaces the info on how to work the suit, so must go through his days fighting crime with powers and abilities he can barely control.

According to the trade, Hernandez persuaded Cannell and Disney to give him a crack when he brought in the original superhero suit from the show which he acquired from the original costume designer.

No words on stars or directors yet.

all i can say is, it's about time! i hope they treat this right.

also, at comingsoon.net, they're reporting that unlike the original series, there will be multiple suits/heores on earth.

I guess the only question now is, what pop band gets to do the remake of the theme song? :rolleyes

i'm really hoping that production of this movie will revive interest in showing reruns somewhere.

Wow I could go either way with this one. I really enjoyed watching the series when it was on, but this has a real potential of being another throwaway SNL-member-turned-failed-movie-star type of film.

Wow. I thought this was one of the more underrated TV shows of the 80s. Hopefully, this will be at least worth a matinee. I can only hope that this is the last obstacle to bringing Manimal to the big screen!
