I'm building a new house and would like to use my existing 5.1 speakers. My L/C/R speakers will be freestanding, but I'd like to put my rears in the ceiling.

Can I buy some paintable rectangular grilles to mount on the ceiling and lay my rear speakers on them from the attic side? Do any such grilles exist? How bad is this idea?

It will change the sound of the speakers because you are effectively increasing the width of the baffle. Depending on the quality of the speakers, the change can be dramatic in the midrange area. The proper way to design a speaker is to account for the width of the front baffle when designing the crossover.

If you decide to go through with this, check out parts express. They have in-wall blank kits that you may be able to adapt to your needs.

I have to agree with Robert that doing this may dramatically alter the response and directionality of the surrounds, causing undesired results, sloppy sound, or you may find that the surround tracks are almost unnoticeable even when focusing on them. (They are supposed to my mostly unnoticable most of the time anyways).

I personally would mount them on the wall as opposed to the ceiling, but you know your situation better than I do, so this might not be a viable option.
