DVD MOVIES WITH GOOD SOUNDTRACKS

PEARL HARBOUR (DD 5.1)

The "Pearl Harbour" DD 5.1 DVD, apparently had non functional, original type, "EX flags" mistakenly encoded during it's DVD transfer process, despite the absence of any DD-EX soundtrack.
Original type "EX flags" can conflict with some early "EX" decoder equipped processors, and cause audio drop outs. Most processors must be set to " DD-EX = ON " in order to force EX processing, because non functional "EX flags" can not successfully trigger a DD-EX decoder set to "Auto Detect".
(Ben Affleck, Kate Beckinsale, Josh Hartnett, Jennifer Garner)
(Formula WW II Romance Action)
(Occasional good sound effects) (Overseas DTS version tested)

At this stage, I know of 58 Australian release DVD movies with
"EX" or "ES" soundtracks.
This number will increase, as most DVD movies in the USA are released with these formats.
User experience with "EX flag" function and compatibility, may vary according to decoder type and settings.

DVD Master List compiled by Mr Frank ..........20/05/07

Extract from official "Dolby" Web site:

Feature films originally released in Dolby Digital Surround EX (the cinema version) carry the encoded extra surround channel in their subsequent DVD releases, as well as onto 5.1-channel digital satellite and TV broadcasts. If your home theater system has a receiver or preamp/processor with Dolby Digital EX decoding and speakers to support 6.1 or 7.1 playback, you can hear Surround EX soundtracks as they were meant to be heard, with the increased realism created by the extra surround channel. As in the cinema, with regular 5.1-channel Dolby Digital playback no sonic information is lost (although you'll miss out on the heightened realism).

Current Dolby Digital Surround EX soundtracks contain a digital flag that can automatically activate the EX decoding in a receiver or preamp/processor. For titles released prior to late 2001, however, you need to turn on the EX decoding manually.

P.S.
Personal experience with "EX flag" function does not correlate with this statement.

Around the World in 80 Days (1956)
Dolby Digital 5.1

Excellent fidelity and seems to be a faithful adaptation of the original 6-track 70mm magnetic mix, complete with directional sound effects. I forget if it has split surrounds, but the 70mm mix would have had mono surrounds anyways.

M (1931)
Dolby Digital 1.0

Criterion's remastered edition looks and sounds fantastic. The fidelity of the sound is amazingly clear, especially for such an old soundtrack. No excessive filtering, so the natural hiss is intact. This is an important film for sound design since Fritz Lang really took the technology to its limits.

The Holy Mountain (1973)
Dolby Digital 5.1 (and original 2.0 mono)

Alejandro Jodorowsky's beyond-surreal masterpiece is greatly enhanced by the 5.1 remix. Everything sounds fresh, especially the awesome music score. The dialogue is especially crisp, which isn't surprising since nearly all of it is ADR (most of the film was shot silent).

Fantasia (1940)
Dolby Digital 5.0 and DTS 5.0

The multi-track recordings are perfectly translated to 5.0, with excellent fidelity. The CD soundtrack is often overfiltered, but it's all proper here. The only problem is the redubbing of Deems Taylor, but all of the music is great.

Citizen Kane (1941), The Third Man (1949), Casablanca (1942), The Maltese Falcon (1941)
Dolby Digital 1.0 mono

These are some of the best mono mixes I've heard. The Third Man (Criterion) used the original soundtrack negative and it's obvious how much of an asset it was. It's almost a little too clear since you can hear Carol Reed's voice bounce off the walls wherever he recorded the opening narration. And the zither music... wonderful.

Warner Bros. does a lovely job on their mono mixes, especially from the 1940s. Citizen Kane, The Maltese Falcon, and Casablanca probably sound better than the original prints!

Rear Window (1954)
Dolby Digital 2.0 mono

I think the restoration required the sound to be taken off an actual print since the original elements were missing. You'd never know from hearing it!

American Graffiti (1973)
Dolby Digital 2.0 surround

Excellent fidelity and great use of the mono surrounds. Probably the best 2.0 surround track I've heard.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)
Dolby Digital 5.1/2.0 mono

Surprisingly excellent quality 5.1 remix. I didn't expect much, but everything sounds almost new.

Becket (1964)
Dolby Digital 5.1

The new restoration used magnetic sound originals that were falling apart, yet it's invisible in the restored audio. Voices are crystal clear, as is the majestic music score. Excellent work.

The Blues Brothers (1980)
Dolby Digital 5.1

The 5.1 remix for the extended cut is fantastic. All the music booms through the speakers, which is welcomed for the often bassy blues numbers. The 2.0 surround original mix (on the theatrical cut) is great, but the music suffers a bit.

Oklahoma! (1955)
Dolby Digital 5.0

Despite having terrible quality video, the Todd-AO version's sound is flawless. It's so warm and alive!

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Peter Pan (1953 - Platinum Edition), Bambi (1942), Alice in Wonderland (1951 - Masterpiece Edition)
Dolby Digital 5.1 (and original 2.0 mono)

While the digital restorations of the image have sparked plenty of criticism (mostly exaggerated), Disney did a fantastic job of remixing to 5.1. Unlike the 5.1 for Mary Poppins (with new sound effects), all of these keep the original components, but spread out. Peter Pan (the recent Platinum Edition) sounds fantastic, as if they must have kept all the original recordings. Snow White sounds amazingly good for such an old film. Same thing for the others. They're tasteful, as they stay faithful to the original mixes, but without going overboard on expansion. The original mono tracks are welcomed since they're equally high quality.

Dr. Strangelove (1964 - 40th Anniversary Edition)
DTS 5.1/Dolby Digital 5.1/original mono

Dr. Strangelove didn't seem like a film that really needed a remix since it has such a documentary-like look. The new 5.1 mixes add an incredible amount of depth, as well as an increase in fidelity. TCM aired the restored (and all 1.66:1) version a few weeks before the DVD. Even with just stereo sound on my TV for that showing, I could tell the restoration's soundtrack has been drastically improved.

Eraserhead (1977)
DD 2.0 mono

I really wish David Lynch used PCM 2.0, but there's a lot of strength here. For such a low budget film, he must have made sure the sound was as good as possible.

I usually like to note older films since it must be more difficult to obtain high quality since elements can be missing. As for newer post-1990 films, it has more to do with the quality of the mixes. A recent film shouldn't have any issues. When a film from 1931 can sound 30-40 years newer, that's amazing work.

In my opinion a "good" movie soundtrack (excluding qualifications/variations)
has the following attributes :

1. Decent overall dynamics
2. Decent bass
3. Frequent/strong rear and front to rear surround panning effects;
(not just localised across the front speakers)
4. Fidelity/Clarity - lack of congestion and noise/hiss especially for dialogue
5. Well integrated/balanced surround sound effects and/or theme music
eg. Mad Max 1 and Blade Trinity have overpowering theme music
6. Decent rear ambience effects

Is your list based on Australian releases (region 4) or U.S. releases (region 1)?

I would like to know more about why someone thinks certain soundtracks are "good". For DVD purposes, I am more interested in the way the soundtrack is presented; not so much if the sound track was well designed in its original release. Some of those listed in the original post have remarks like "average soundtrack", which makes me think those films should be in an "average soundtracks" thread.

Patrick McCart's post is a textbook example of how to comment on "good" soundtracks, IMO. When people list their favorite movies/DVDs on threads, they should always add a reason as to why they recommend certain movies (or in this case, soundtracks). It's a pet peeve of mine, but it always sorta gripes me when someone (on this or any other movie board) asks for recommendations on, say western films, or war films, and someone posts a list of about 150 films of the genre with not notes as to why they are recommended.

I will add that a favorite film of mine, DVD sound-wise is MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD. The soundtrack has such great presence. You hear every creak, the wind whipping the sails, etc. In battle scenes, you not only hear the tremendous explosions, but all the splinters as they fall back on deck. I usually listen to the DTS track of this film, and the SE has a feature on how the cannon sound effects were achieved.

My list is based on Australian Region 4 releases, as these DVD's are often short changed regarding presence of DTS, DD-EX and DTS-ES soundtracks compared to US Region 1 releases.

Let me take a listen to what I've got...

Apocalypse Now (both versions) (70mm SS/Dolby Digital) - Deep Sensurround style bass, and agressive stereo imaging in the rears.

Almost Famous/"Untitled" (DTS/Dolby) - Great ambience to the live sections, dialogue firmly in main front channel.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (Dolby 5.1 created from 70mm stems) - Wide front soundstage and excellent break up of the mono rear. Subwoofer is used frequently.

Duel (DTS/Mono) - Like Jaws this is another Laurent Bouzereau "foley pass" mix, but it fairs a little better than that film. Great bass and separation effects make you feel like your in the car. Missing some important SFX twoards the end though (a stock dinosaur's roar which must have gone missing from the library). Preserved mono track sounds good and has all the original sound effects intact.

Gone With the Wind (Dolby 5.1) - This film holds the record IIRC for existing in the most sound formats (mono, 2-track stereo, Perpecta, 6-track Stereo, 4-track stereo, 4-track optical Dolby, a mix from 1998 in DTS, SDDS, and Dolby Digital, and finally this DD mix created exclusively for DVD), and I'm fairly certain this is the best of the lot. Wide front, occasional but very deep bass, and excellent and judicious use of the surrounds for ambience, not whiz bang effects.

Meet Me in St. Louis (Dolby 5.0) Great sepparation in the music (they used a multichannel master for this).

Once Upon A Time in the West (Dolby 5.1) - Unlike the remix of GBTU, this doesn't sound "overcranked" and "overfolleyed". Lots of ambience and occasional but not frequent subwoofer usage. Morricone's score is full and rich.

The Towering Inferno (Dolby 4.0) - Accurately presents the sound of the film as it would have been heard theatrically. Surround used sparingly.

Seven Samurai 2006 Ver. (Dolby 2.0 Surround) - Cleans up a very rough sounding movie and gives it a modern surround touch without straying from the original film sound.

I may have been a little lenient when I included
Star Wars IV A New Hope, in this list due to it's compromised fidelity, but I also considered the digital remixing/restoration effort and final result achieved for such an old film. Personally, I felt that it just warranted inclusion because the soundtrack had sufficiently proficient dynamics, panning, bass, and ambience effects to distinguish it from being merely an "Average soundtrack".
I qualified the movie inclusion with the description "Occasional good sound effects", but accept that some home theatre audio purists may not agree that this film has a "good" soundtrack. Of course there may be some technical flaws that I am unaware of.

I have previously replied to another post with a general list of criteria used for determining whether a movie soundtrack is "good".

" In my opinion a "good" movie soundtrack (excluding qualifications/variations)
has the following attributes :

1. Decent overall dynamics
2. Decent bass
3. Frequent/strong rear and front to rear surround panning effects;
(not just localised across the front speakers)
4. Fidelity/Clarity - lack of congestion and noise/hiss especially for dialogue
5. Well integrated/balanced surround sound effects and/or theme music
eg. Mad Max 1 and Blade Trinity have overpowering theme music
6. Decent rear ambience effects "

I could not attach specific soundtrack strengths or characteristics for each individual film because my list was too large, and the "project" was already taking up an inordinate amount of time due to inclusion of other details, such as; actors names, film genre, release dates when Special Editions were reviewed, audio formats additional to DD 5.1, qualified inclusions, and overall personal film ratings, etc.
Originally my "DVD Master List" was intended purely for Australian consumption. In Australia there is a persistent myth that Region 4 DVDs do not have DD-EX or DTS-ES soundtracks. This myth is still perpetuated by many retailers.
I was determined to list all DD-EX/DTS-ES Region 4 Australian release DVDs known to me.
Consequently, I included those with "average soundtracks" in the subsection titled :

"EX" OR "ES" DVD MOVIES WITH UNTESTED OR AVERAGE SOUNDTRACKS

In this context, I feel that this presentation is still "clear" and "honest".

I totally agree with your assessment of the soundtrack for
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD, and had already
"briefly" distinguished it by attaching the description (Brilliant sound track).

I appreciate your attention to detail and input.

Thanks. I have moved this thread to the appropriate area and included that information in the title. I've also added a link to your post in the main DD-EX/DTS-ES thread, which is preferable to repeating the list. We prefer that things are posted just once.
