A friend of mine is selling a Sony STR-K502P with the 5 satellites and sub (Sub is rated at 100W I believe and Satellites are 100W as far as I can remember) along with a Pioneer DV-C503 DVD player for $200 total. He paid $500 for it at Best Buy, and has a service plan through June 2005. This means I can break it by blowing out the speakers or whatever through June 2005 and get another $500 system to replace it.

I already have a Pioneer DVD player so I don't really need his, although it is a 5-discer but it doesn't have any additional features other than that and is a bit worse because of the lack of MP3 and lack of more than 1x FF and FR. Basically it boils down to the reciever and surround for $200. I want to get something for next school year and don't want to spend a ton because I have to spend a ton of money on other stuff for next year. Does anyone have any opinions on if this deal is worth it?

Last year I was looking to set one up and was looking at around $500 for an Onkyo reciever with JBL NSP1 satellites and a separate Sub. How would this system compare?

He said he HAD to know tonight, I guess because there was someone else offering to buy it for $170 without the DVD player, and I crack under pressure so I said I would take it for $200 with the DVD player. Was this a mistake?

For the record, it was bought for $400 at Best Buy and technically speaking I could somehow break it and return it for $400 store credit and still have the DVD player, so I guess it can't be all that bad a deal for me. I actually might try and do that anyway if possible, anyone know a safe way to blow a reciever and surround that BB would still give credit for with their service plan?

Brandon, since you seem to be asking about the receiver, I've moved your thread here to the appropriate area. The Basics section is not for specific model recommendations but for general discussion at the beginner level. Thanks.
