I might go on Sunday starting at 4 to watch Fellowship and The Two Towers and then go back Monday at 4 to watch Return of the King.

It seems like every chain has a different series of older blockbusters screening this weekend. IMAX (which, here, is at the AMC) is doing the Marvel 10th Anniversary marathon. Cinemark has the Harry Potter films (also screening out of sequence) and now Regal is doing Lord of the Rings.

They must not think anything else will draw at this time.

I don't have a Regal near me, but this would be interesting if I did. However, it is profoundly stupid to show them out of order.

AMC is now listing Potter so it’s not just Cinemark.

I think this is a great trend and hope it continues. It is wonderful to have the chance to see modern classics back on the big screen in normal theater environments.

The strangest part is that they are showing it out of order the first day then in order Saturday and Tuesday.

The strangest part is that they are showing it out of order the first day then in order Saturday and Tuesday.

My guess is that they're running them at non-linear times some days so people can see them in order on consecutive days without being locked into the same showtime each day, but that's just a guess.

Even with that thought in mind, there's not a lot of apparent logic to the showtimes!

That article has been updated with a Tweet from Regal explaining the programming:

The Lord of the Rings movies are playing in order on Saturday and Tuesday if you want to watch them all on the same day. The other days they are rotating so that if you can only go at a certain time of day, you still have an opportunity to see all 3 movies.

With Friday as a work day for most people, the daytime schedules on Friday are largely irrelevant as many people wouldn't be able to attend. The only Friday showing that's widely accessible for people going to school or working a normal schedule is the Friday at 8pm showing, so it makes sense to me that they'd put Fellowship there, which would allow anyone who was not seeking to see all three films in a single day a chance to get started there.

I also think that of the three films, Fellowship is generally the film that's held in the highest regard, so it makes sense to make that screening more accessible as it will probably be in greater demand.

Really? I would say it’s Return Of The King.

I’m not saying that its my favorite, just the one which seems to have the most adoration among the critics and audiences.

I think Return Of The King is still liked, but when I hear casual fans talking about it, the first comments are usually criticisms of its length and multiple endings before any of the good is acknowledged.

I personally find the extended version of Two Towers to be my favorite.

According to the run time looks like the theatrical edition? I would love to see these again in a theater but the extended edition is the only version I watch.

Thanks for posting about this Wayne, or I would have missed out on this. I never want to miss an opportunity of watching the extended edition in the theater. Took my son today to see Fellowship. What a great experience! First time being in an RPX theater. I guess the rumbling chairs is part of the experience? Thoroughly enjoyed it! Going to see Two Towers tomorrow night.

No rumbling seats in my RPX theater unless they added them in the last month. I'm seeing Fellowship and Two Towers tomorrow and then Return of the King on Monday. I'm glad they are putting them in the RPX theaters since they are the best theater in the complex with the possible exemption of if the same complex has an IMAX screen.

My theater seems to have adjusted their show times to accommodate the running times from what I saw listed earlier this week. I just bought tickets for dead center in the theater and Fellowship now starts at 4:30 instead of 4 and The Two Towers at 9 instead of 8.

Maybe that was the wrong choice of words. All I know is the bass was so deep our chairs vibrated and I've never experienced that at the Cinemark that I normally go to. We watched The Two Towers last night and will see The Return of the King Tues. night.

I had a great time yesterday but it is clear that Fellowship needs a remastering. It was somewhat visually inconsistent and I remember reading that part of film was completed in 1K. The Two Towers was at least visually consistent. Audio was top-notch for both films.
