I read some reviews on different cd/sacd players and people refer to "redbook" recordings. Can anyone explain this type of recording or what this term means?[IMG]

Red Book simply means a standard audio CD (Red Book audio refers to 16-bit PCM audio sampled at 44.1kHz, the same configuration used by CD).

Back in 1980 Philips and Sony released the physical and technical specifications of the Compact Disc system. These specifications were (allegedly) distributed in red binders, hence the term 'Red Book'.

Variations on the CD format introduced over the following years were also given 'book' colours. These include: Yellow Book (CD-ROM), Green Book (CD-i) and Orange Book (CD-R).
