By plain I mean just a blank surface...no brand names, no fancy swirls or any color at all...just silver. Sure, you can write on the top surface. There are just no lines to guide you along! Just plain, no nonsense, quality CDR's. They advertise themselves as "The Only U.S. Owned, U.S. Based CD-R Manufacturer". And they also have good prices on DVD-R media. The $31 for 100 is a sale price, usually they sell for $54, which isn't a very good deal...but they always have some on sale. I just hope they get them back in stock before they take them off sale! They also have their "silver/light green" 74 min CD-R's on sale for $39/100 and they are in stock (back in June they had these on sale $19 for 100(!) so always check there site for sales). I have purchased some of these also...they have a more shiny, blank silver top surface, with a light green tinted data side...whereas the "true silver" ones have a slightly granular top surface and silver data side.

Mitsui makes awesome data discs, I use them in my HHB pro model cd-recorder and my mac with cd-burner. Check out www.mediasupply.com they have some awesome prices on bulk media and also accessories.

How bad is it to use generics?

I had been using them until recently, and switched to Memorex. I back-up lots of things that I want to last forever and would be real pissed if they died in a few years.

I've never had a problem with TDK (except in the car player) and I've used Memorex (but only a couple)

My players (CD and DVD) don't seem to care ---- they even play non-finalized CD-Rs (I haven't tried my 18 changer yet .... hmmmmmm ........)

Speaking of Costco...

If you get a little book of coupons from Costco, keep it! Here's the deal they have on TDK's. 2-18 through 2-24

TDK CD-R80 24x

100 pack

Original Price 35.99

Coupon -7.00

Mail-In Rebate -12.00

-----------------------

=16.99 for a pack of 100

Even if you don't mail in the rebate, you would be paying 28.99 for a pack of 100 with the coupon.

I usually recomend CD-r's that are from companies that have made recording products before. Maxell, TDK and the like are all pretty good discs. I have to admit though that the only ones I use are Verbatim. I think they are the absolute best.

From the reading I've done at various cdr forums/websites, Taiyo Yuden made discs are among the best. If you're looking to find these, I see that some Fuji, HP, and older 74min TDKs are made by Taiyo Yuden.
You can find out who actually manufactured your cdrs with a useful little program called CDR Identifier. You can get it here: http://www.gum.de/it/cdrid/
But, the information read by this is by no means guaranteed to be absolutely correct.
A quick way to look for TY cdrs is to look for a milky colored plastic box and look for a little 2in or so screw top cover. At least that's what my Fujis and TDKs look like. Here's an example of what I mean. I hope the pics are good enough, and last (they're from eBay auctions).
