I would buy Dreamweaver MX: The Missing Manual. It's probably right in between the two books you noted. It's an O'Reilly book and they usually have the BEST books in my experience. Its 750 pages and it is comprehensive.

i have dreamweaver 4 bible and all other "bibles" for 3d studio max 4 and adobe illustrator 9. i can pretty much say that it is hard to follow. thats why i am avoiding the series now.

i will look into the missing manual.
