The Cider House Rules (well, the book is much better than the movie)
Lolita

Yeow, this thread proves something, but I'm not sure what.

Check out the book of THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1-2-3; it's excellent, as is the film.

THE EXORCIST is a great book.

ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN is a great book.

DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP? is not a great book, but it certainly is insightful in light of "Blade Runner."

CONTACT is a great book.

EMPIRE OF THE SUN is a great book.

FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH is a great book.

LEAVING LAS VEGAS is a great book.

And all are great films as well. Also, don't forget the books upon which Hitchcock based his great films. Or Fleming's James Bond books. Or the pulp novels upon which many of the great noirs are based ("Double Indemnity," "The Thin Man," "The Maltese Falcon," etc.).

>>

Or how about a good movie based on a bad book?

American Psycho - Ellis

Hannibal - Harris

Though I would recommend reading the main original source of the concept which are Against the Fall of Night and The City and the Stars by Arthur C. Clarke. While we're on the topic of Clarke, why not read Rendezvous with Rama so you're ready when the David Fincher film comes out.

I prefer to avoid "books" that were obviously written with the intention of being made into a movie. This eliminates pretty much anything by Michael Crichton. So...

A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean
Bliss and Oscar and Lucinda by Peter Carey
The Magnificent Ambersons by Booth Tarkington
The Tin Drum by GŸnter Grass
2001 by Arthur C. Clarke
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
The Stand by Stephen King
Birdy by William Wharton
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
A Room with a View by E. M. Forster
The Fox by D. H. Lawrence
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Dracula by Bram Stoker
1984 by George Orwell
The Trial by Franz Kafka

Just finished reading THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS by Booth Tarkington. Then, I had to rewatch my old Criterion LD of same. Why isn't this title available on DVD? By the way, aside from the tacked-on, feel-good ending the film is quite faithful to the novel.

I'd second Contact. The movie is a perfect companion for the book, as the movie touches on subjects not fully realized in the book, and vice versa.
Sense and Sensibility Jane Austen rules!
Bridget Jones's Diary I really enjoyed this movie. Not having read the book, I heard it is great too.
Mansfield Park Oooh looky, another Jane Austen adaption! See a trend here? Frances McDormand is hot! :)
Bram Stoker's Dracula Mmmm...small appearance by Monica Bellucci, Keannu Reeves' tree impersonation, Anthony Hopkins cheesing it out, and Gary Oldman doing what he does best! Perfect! :D

Well, yes and no. All the other stuff in the film is in the book, the problem is half the stuff in the book is missing from the film.
