In my experience all Tivos hum a bit.

Like others have said, they are all basically made from the same factory, but there are differences. Unfortunately, you won't notice the differences until after you purchase the unit. I have 4 directivos and I can't hear any of them even with my ear right up by it (and one of them is upgraded to 210 hours). I have a friend, however, that also has a Directivo and whenever I'm at his house I can hear the slight hum.

Does the Tivo box get quieter when it's in Standby mode? To be honest, I've never noticed the noise.

btw, I highly recommend standby mode whenever you're not using it. You get to it from the main menu, and saves electricity.
