hi all -

i need to get crackin' on my columbia house membership. i thought i'd pick up a pj harvey album since i've always wanted to try their stuff.

i know a couple of their tunes, but that's about it.

so, i think they have like four albums?

which one do you recommend and why?

thanks in advance!

All of them.
Dry - Third Best
Four Track Demos - only get this once you become a hardcore fan
Rid of Me - Fourth Best
To Bring You My Love - this is the best of her albums IMHO
Is This Desire? - Worst Album, not because its bad, just that something has to come in last place :)
Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea - Second Best

Yeah I like all that dark and gloomy stuff.

I would say those two albums you have picked are the best way to get familiar with Polly. To Bring You My Love really shows off her old style, gritty experimental rock n roll, where as Stories shows off her great song writing abilities with a much cleaner more put together sound. I can't wait for the next album to come out...she normally release one every other year and it'll be two years since Stories came out.

I'll buck the trend and recommend "Is This Desire?" which is the saddest of all of her records and the one with the most varied musical styles. "Rid of Me" comes in a close second-- the record, produced in typical sonic-shredding style by Steve Albini, is a real take-no-prisoners affair.

Hell, even the hard-to-find "Four Track Demos" is great.
