Hi,Im totally new to HT and have a question,if you have speakers rated at say 250 watts do you need a reciever that has 250 watts per channel to fully be able to drive the speakers to there max.I've noticed alot or recievers are rated for 100 to 130 watts per channel meanwhile alot of speakers are rated at a higher wattage than this are these speakers underdriven with these recievers?I know this is a noobie question but hey I have to start leaning somewhere!!

Absolutely not. During normal listening your receiver will only push a few watts to the speakers. During loud passages, that amount will double or even triple but it very rarely reaches the receiver's maximum output.

RMS ratings on speakers are not always measured the same way nor are they very meaningful in everyday use. That is just the amount of power they can handle for a specific amount of time before components in them start to fail.

I build my own speakers and have no idea what the RMS rating would be on them. I don't want to know because I would have to destroy one to find out. But with my 110w per channel receiver I can push their output up to concert levels without straining them in the least bit.
