Ok, I'm totally lost again. Been lookin to upgrade receivers to something in the $500 class, but every time I go lookin, my spending limit seems to want to jump! lol. I have listened to several, now, and am not getting any closer to a decision. I like the Denon 1804, Marantz sr 5400, Yamaha RX-V740, and the RX-V1400, and also the Integra 5.4 as well. I cant find anyone who has H&K to listen to in my area, but have looked at both the AV230 and AV330, as well as the AV325. I have KEF Q50s for fronts, Bose center, and Energy rears. Mostly HT, some Jazz,Country, Classic Rock. Help!

Bob did you read my reply in the thread you posted earlier? If not here it is again.

You may want to take a look at 6ave . I was reading a thread on another forum where if you placed an order for a Yamaha RX-V1300 they were subing the RX-V1400 in is place($529). Here's the link to the thread. The RX-V1400 from what I'm reading around the differenet forums is a hot commodity. Very heavy on the features for the price. With 6ave giving it away for the price of the RX-V1300 its a steal. Give it a serious thought before the offer disappears. I picked one up(not at 6ave as I live in Canada) to use as a pre/pro.

I ordered mine from 6ave.com because of being in the thread on avsforum.com (PewterTA). It is a great deal! Highly recommend it.

as I stated on your thread on avsforum (but as it is closed) I would suggest gettings an HK AVR525, they can be had for as cheap as $501.99. I'm not sure if that is shipped or not but it's deffinatly a step up from the receivers your currently looking at. It is however top end of your budget :) ... IMHO Harman Kardon is the way to go.

I'm a little leary about purchasing online. Seems that if there is a problem with your purchase, could be forever to get satisfaction. I prefer to deal with local businesses for this reason, as well as the fact there is someone to deal with face to face. So, for now, online isnt happening. My price may go up a little after listening to the Yamaha RX-V1400, very impressive. Has video conversion, on screen display, and a handy setup utility that blows H&K's setup utility away. Best local price on this model is around $740. The Marantz SR5400 is $550, Denon 1804 is $500, H&K 230 is $430, 330 is $550. Any thoughts with my revised specs?

well in that case I would suggest a Yamaha RX-V1400, I don't own one myself but I do know that there are a lot of satisfied customers out there. If you are going to purchase locally at least goto a *big* store that does price matching like best buy or something. Then bring in a printout of some large online retailer and their price for the product your buying.

Thanks for your input, Jeff. I may just do that, have to wait and see on the next paycheck. Do you know if these large retailers will price match based on an internet price? The price I quoted you was an upcoming Christmas sale price that the son of the owner says he'll honor right now if I want, otherwise they charge msrp which is $799. I also really need to replace my Bose center channel for something that more closely matches my KEF Q-50 front speakers. Any thoughts? Bob.

Bob,

as I don't live in the US I'm not too sure on what retailers match internet pricing, but I know up here Future Shop does. I'd imagine a place like Best Buy or similar stores will price match.

I quickly google'd your speakers but didn't come up with much, although I didn't look all that hard. I'm not sure what your budget is for you speakers so here is what I suggest. Just because I hate your leariness about saving money via internet.

Call up an audio specialist store (or a few of them) and see what companies (HK / Yamaha ect ..) have service centers in your city. Chances are there are a few different service centers that are authorized to do repairs for warranty. (assuming you live in a decent sized city anyhow)

Anyhow if you do come up a few service centers then you will be able to order over the internet while keeping with a local way to deal with problems that may arise with your equipment. Just a suggestion but it might spark your fancy, thought I'd mention it.

.....

back to your Bose center channel .. can you give a little more detail on what wattage / speaker design your looking for as your new center and also around how much your looking to spend ?

I'm just interested in matching more closely the two KEFs, so the imaging is better across from the sides through the center. The Bose center channel is a VCS-10. The whole reason for that speaker was a heighth restriction, and at the time, this was all I could find to fit. My space requires no taller than 4 3/4 inches. So, if I find something more closely matching the KEF's, I won't need the Bose. You interested? Bob.
