This may seem like a really silly question (I'm pretty new at all of this) but how many rated watts should be alright for the speakers in relation to the receiver (as in higher or lower?). Or is that just a non-issue?

Ideally: about the same. Theoretically: nothing can be hurt if the speakers have a higher wattage. Practically: if they're not too far apart seldom a problem.

Just make sure the receiver's wattage is high enough for the room size (meaning: don't use a 60W/channel receiver in a party hall sized 200' x 200' and full of screaming people). If not you may blow your speakers (by something called clipping).
