Hi. I searched the forum for this sort of thing, but only found really old threads. So I'm asking again.

I need a receiver for about $350. My setup is: computer > USB Sound Blaster HD (analog) > receiver > book shelf speakers & subwoofer.

I only use 2.1 on this, but I need it to play loud cleanly. Sometimes I play guitar along to songs so it needs to be loud.

I'm looking at the Pioneer VSX-832, which seems to fit the bill, but I've read that Pioneer isn't what it used to be. So I'm looking for other suggestions.

Thanks.

I just bought a refurbed Yamaha tsr-7810, same as an RX-V781 for $369. Looks and smells new, not a mark on it. If you look around, you can find a lot of refurbished units for great prices. The models are about to change, so closeouts are coming too. I got my last HT receiver, a Yamaha RX-V659 for a great price when it was on closeout. I called to order a 559, but they were out, and they gave me the same price on the 659. I jumped on it. I think it was like $349.99, in 2006.

I used to, a long time ago, sell Pioneer, and the high end stuff was pretty good, but I warned my customers to stay away from the cheap stuff. Same went for Kenwood. Sansui was just to be avoided for soldering issues alone. The soldering issues are mostly in the past, but every so often, I fix something that just is a bad solder joint. Always hand soldered.

I could be missing something but a receiver seems like overkill since you didn't mention any need for video processing/switching. I use this for similar functionality. As for receivers, I agree with Hemiram, look for good preowned deals. I have an Onkyo TX SR 605 that I will give you free of charge if you live in ATL metro. The display doesn't work but other than that it's fully operational.
