Receiver question: STR-DE835 Sony (1 Viewer)

At the moment, I'm unable to find my manual for this; I just added the old Xbox to the component rack this weekend and put the optical cable for it into the third slot (1st for the dvd player, 2nd empty). I don't seem to be getting any 5.1 sound coming from the xbox though.

The question being, is there a selection that needs to be made to force it to read from the 3rd optical connection?

With the appropriate input selected, toggle thru the "input mode" button and select Optical. My 940 works this way, so the 835 should be similar.

there might need to be a setting on the xbox that needs to be selected as well.

also make sure you have "auto format decode" or whatever sony is calling the soundfield usually used with 5.1 sound selected on the digital input.
