If you are going to listen to compressed music over a nice system you may want to lower your expectations. The better the components the more compression artifacts you will be able to hear. It's the same as watching a standard definition program on an HDTV. It was fine when you had a 27" TV but now the TV is bigger (bigger sound) and a higher resolution (better quality speakers and electronics) and you see just how bad things were with the old NTSC signal.

My #1 suggestion is to get a receiver with pre-outs so you can add external amp(s). No receiver can actually provide much power. Marantz seems to have nice ones with this feature. My personal impression is that the ratio of cost from video to audio equipment is way too high. I'd use the savings you are finding to improve the audio gear across the line.

Plus what Robert said about compressed audio and iPods. Garbage in, garbage out.
