I called a Toronto area dealer today to see if they had the black RP91's in yet. They do not, but he said they could take an order for sometime in July. He tried to convince me that I'd like the champagne, and he's probably right but I really don't need a constant reminder to my s.o. of the needless purchase of a new DVD player when the old one works just fine, if you get my drift.
But the other interesting thing he told me was that in July the unit will come with a $50 rebate from Panasonic, so I should wait until July for either color. Thought you Canadians would be interested in that. I have no idea if there would be a similar rebate in the U.S.

If it's true, then I can certainly wait another couple of weeks. What dealer did you go to? I live in Burnaby, BC...

The deal you get with this player gets better and better.
I don't see why Panasonic would need to rebate this player, but hey, who's complaining...
If you can wait, that sounds like a kick-ass deal if I ever heard it.
You can't beat the deal for $450, but for $400? Fuhgedaboutit!

Yup, the Panasonic rebates are real. They are on a couple of dozen Panasonic products with rebates from $25-$200 on retail purchases from July 2 to Aug 31. The RP91 rebate is $50. I just ordered a black one which the dealer thinks should be in by Thursday next.

The rebates appears to be for Canada only. I checked the rebates/promotions section of Panasonic.com and there is no mention of a rebate for the RP-91.

That makes the Canadian price very competitive. I had considered buying this in the States, but was able to find it for under $700 CND (before tax) in Canada, and the $50 rebate to boot. Not quite as good as the prices we get on Paradigm and Bryston, but not a bad deal either.

Wayne - may I ask where you went for this deal?

Wayne,
I, too, would like to know where you can get one for CDN$700 before taxes. I have heard that dealers are typically selling the RP91 for CDN$800-$850 plus PST and GST. If you want, you can email me. Thanks in advance.

Wayne - thanks for the tip!
Picked up the champagne model for the same price you paid!
It is definitely a distinctive look.
Early impressions on my 4:3 50" Toshiba RPTV - marginal improvements - does a better job on downconversion of anamorphic DVDs - my previous player was a Panasonic RV60. Nonanamorphic ones such as Titanic and The Abyss definitely look better. Haven't had a chance to play with video settings yet.
Unfortunately the little blue light will have to stay dim for awhile yet. Hope to make the move to a 16:9 set before the fall.
The audio is another story - major improvement here. The soundstage images much better with greater clarity. I'm hearing subtle background sounds I didn't previously. ie the scraping of Tarzan's feet while he's swinging through the jungle, background conversations are now clearly audible. Excellent!
Further testing to be done!

All this and a $50 rebate - Yeehaw!

Congratulations Lou! Glad to be of help. Benny (is that who you dealt with?) said he expected to have the black one in by Thursday or Friday. Here's hoping he's right.
Don't suppose you have any DVD-Audio material to confirm whether or not the RP91's bass management works for DVD-A, do you? There is another thread running here today which raises some doubts about that.
Enjoy the new toy!

Hi Wayne.
Yes I dealt with Benny. Nice little store.
They were just unloading a Toshiba 50HX70 when I was there.
There are no more RP91s in stock there. Just a champagne one left on display. He said it would take about a week to get an order in.
No DVD-A material. Where is a good spot in the GTA to go?
Wayne what kind of HDTV do you have?
