Due to room constraints, my center and main speakers will be placed on a shelf above the TV that is part of an opening between the family room the TV is in, and the formal dining room that adjoins it. Given that there will be no back wall behind the speakers(within 20'), is a front ported speaker preferable to a rear ported one, or does it matter?

Eric, I don't think that it will matter in your case. Rear- ported speakers need to have enough clearance in the back for the ports to perform correctly, and you'll have plenty to spare! [IMG]

Whether the speaker is front or rear ported doesn't make a difference in sound, granded that the minimum space requirments around the port are satasfied.
I prefer front ported because of the look [IMG]
