Hi everybody,

I am hoping to get some feedback on this question from several folks. In a 5.1surround system, what are some peoples preference as far as rear surrounds? Specifically, do you prefer a dipole/bipole type of speaker of a direct reflecting type? Really curious as to what the masses have to say on this.

Thanks!

Ray

First, some clarification on 5.1 sound. There are no 'rear' surrounds with a 5.1 setup. They are side surrounds, designed to be placed to the left/right sides of the listening area. Rear surrounds are for 6.1/7.1 setups.

For side surrounds, I prefer bi-pole type speakers. For rears, direct radiating (although my current setup uses a unique setup - Axiom QS8's for both side and rears). Others will disagree

David,

Your absolutely correct on the speaker placement, guess I should have been more specific. The pre-wiring in my media room is 5.1, as far as total number of speakers, but the surround pre-wires are on the back wall. So I guess the real question is, since I have little choice currently, unless I rip out the existing wiring and wire up the side walls, should I use direct radiating or bipole/dipole speakers on the back wall.

Thanks

Ray

In that case I think I would go with bipole. I believe this type of speaker would allow the sound to be more dispersed. I would seriously look at these - Surround Speakers - AxiomAudio.

I suggest you wait for a few more responses before making your decision. See what others have to say.

Thanks for the input. BTW, I already have the Axioms on my short list.
