I just upgraded my old Onyko575 to a Denon2802 and I would like some input on rear speakers. Would it be a waste to get 2 back dipole back speakers? I notice that the 2802 supports DTS-ES and if I'm correct this format would be it's only benefit for 6.1. Well it seems DTS DVD'S are a little more rare then DD. I kind of wished that I waited for the Onyko700 which has both DTS-ES/DD-EX which would be better. I really hope someone could tell me different. Another question what is the difference between Select/Ultra/Ultra2 THX? Thanks

Don't worry, Your 2802 is able to play DD-EX DVDs. The 2802 display will show "6.1" but it is actually a matrixed signal and not a discrete sixth channel signal. Only DTS has a discrete rear signal. There was something about licensing/copyright naming conventions/confusion which prevented Denon from putting 'Dolby Digital EX' on the receiver.

DD-EX DVDs are also rare.

A sixth channel is worth it IMHO but you really need room behind the listening position to make the most of it.

I'm I little confused here.

"Some DVDs are Dobly Digital EX-encoded regular Dobly Digital 5.1 DVDs can also be used with a DDEX decoder"

Does this mean that regular Dobly Digital DVDs will be presented in 6.1 playback or does this mean that it is compatable and still will only play in 5.1?

Joel,
If I'm understanding your question correctly, basically any Dolby or DTS 5.1 title can be listened to with your 6.1 selected if you wish. The only difference will be that the rear center (or rear-centers) will receive a matrixed signal only. So yes it means that playback will be compatible with 5.1 or 6.1 formats. Hope this helps.:)
