Ideally, where should the rear speakers be placed to get the best sound and effect out of them? facing forward.....facing in.....facing up or down.....behind?.....the ceiling??????

Chad,
Speaker placement is a lot like buying new speakers, in the end it's your opinion that counts. For a 5.1 setup I prefer having the surround speakers mounted 2-3 ft above ear level (when seated), slightly behind the listener, and both pointing directly at each other . I think that this allows for less localization of the sound effects. Obviously this will not work in every room so you might have to play around with placement a little to see what works best for you. Try using a couple of 6' step ladders as temporary stands and try the speakers in differant locations to see what works best for you. Good luck.
