Nielsen came out with some interesting facts regarding TV usage patterns in the US.

The number of Americans watching traditional TV according to monthly reach was 282.949 million in the first quarter of the year down from 283.302 million in the first quarter of last year.

However the number of people watching time-shifted TV rose to 166.088 million from 145.553 million.

The time spent watching live television was 157:32 hours a month compared to 155:46 hours in the same period last year. Time shift viewing went up to 13:23 hours from 12:09 hours. Watching videos on the Internet has jumped to 8:20 hours from 5:24 hours. Video usage on the mobile is also becoming more popular rising to 5:29 hours from 5:01 hours.

The reach of a Blu ray/DVD devices has gone down from 159.980 million to 152.467 million.

Referencing back to my other post in the gaming area about the XBox One change of direction to forecasting the demise of optical disc distribution becoming obsolete, the stats above show the slow, but certain demise of optical disc for movies....

How many are watching movies over streaming media?

Shouldnt you be asking not only how many are watching over streaming media but downloads as well as that is also a popular reason to watch movies without an optical drive.

The Digital Bits just linked to an interesting study this morning about how PlayStation 3 owners prefer physical media over streaming services:

Not surprising, as PS3 owners are the only ones who can PLAY Blu-rays, let alone Blu 3D's, on their consoles. (The X-Box One was just now thinking of "adding" it.)

Not that the PS3 isn't a bad set-top streaming box either--All the major brands have console-ready apps for it, and as an online-game machine, the console is built for streaming better-quality Internet video on less connection than smart-TV's or Google/Roku boxes.
Let's face, those ads crack us users up: They DO only just do everything. :)
