I had made a promise to myself not too do this. After buying the original American pressing, the colored [white] vinyl, the picture disc, the Mobile Fidelity Super Disc, the English pressing, and the Japanese pressing of: Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. I was only going to get 'trapped' into puchasing "one" copy of title on DVD. No such luck! As hard as I've tried to educate myself on each and every title, I've still been 'caught' re-purchasing these titles. Ugh!

1. T2 SE, T2 UE Tin [one disc], T2 UE Tin [two disc].

2. Boogie Nights [who new they had any 'more' extras?], BN SE.

3. Predator, P SE, & it looks like I'm doing this one again soon! Five Star, anyone?

4. Few Good Men, FGM SE [did not think they cared enough for this title to be revisted].

5. Forbidden Planet, Import FP.

6. Bug's Life, BL SE, Disney is much better now at 'warning' everyone of SE's.

7. Fifth Element, FE SB, who knew the bar would be raised when this 'demo disc' was first released?

8. Saving Private Ryan, SPR DTS.

9. Ed TV SE [at least I missed the standard release!], Ed TV DTS.

10. Antz, Antz DTS.

11. Desperado [a fine transfer], El Mariachi/D [loaded], & D SB [DTS]. Ouch!

12. Tarzan, Tarzan SE [did not see that one coming]. And the first issue had the soundtrack problem that Disney never addressed!

With these re-buy's in the near future,

1. Goodfellas SE, no more flipper!

2. Baraka SE.

3. Dogma SE.

4. BS Dracula, going for the SB.

5. Forbiden Planet. And now a SE in 2002! Let's hope it with the original soundtrack this time.

6. Exorcist. Looking for seamless branching with the improved sound.

7. Almost Famous [on the fence with this title to bootleg]

8. Apocalypse Now. Not doing Redux, but they did improve the sound. Please, seamless branching.

9. The Right Stuff. No flipper. SE coming in 2002.

Which title, if any, have you bought or see yourself buying, again & again?

La Femme Nikita. The original had horrible compression, so I got the new version.
The new version had perfect compression, but they removed the subtitles, thinking that closed captions are the same thing (they're not - closed captions are like cliff note versions of dialogue!).
So now, if it comes out a third time, i am there.
I've succesfully resisted upgrading T2 and The Fifth Element.
I'll be an unusual one and will eventually be buying the original, _shorter_ version of leon:the professional, since the extra long Version Integral that came out later and is more popular is such a different film. I want them both.

Mark, the Lock, Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels: Director's Cut DVD is, to the best of my knowledge, avaliable only in R2. It comes in a jewel case (the only DVD in my collection that comes in that sort of jewel case) and contains 9 mins of added footage. IMO, this is the best version of Lock, Stock in DVD.

A Forbidden Planet SE is on the way? When's the release date? What's on it?

Also, when's the street date for the new Goodfellas disc?

I suppose one disc I'm replacing soon is the newer anamorphic version of The Doors--even though I don't care for the flick all that much. (My psychotic ex-wife was an extra in the film.)

I try not to think of all the discs I've upgraded. It's been a bad habit since the days of laserdisc. When Fox releases the 5-star edition of Speed next year, it will be the fifth time I've bought the film, which is probably a personal record.

Isnt there a 5-Star Edition of R.Scotts' ALIEN due out next year?

And I thought I had read where he was considering retinkering the film for a 25th Anny Rerelease...which means *another* DVD edition in late 2004!

And just think: If those Flourescent Multilayer Discs (FMDs) become the next optical-disc format of choice, we get to replace everything again. Ain't technology wonderful?

(For more information on FMDs, see the December 2001 issue of Widescreen Review.)
