Was thinking of doing a blind purchase on this one, as I am a Guy Pearce fan.

Any assistance is appreciated :)

Interesting set up, which IMO is let down by a weak finale. Carlyle is fun to watch, but the film may not be to everyone's taste :) (had to!!)

I'd probably rent first

For me it was one of those films that was stuck in the 'cool concept' stage - it never got passed its pitch.

Ravenous is definitely different--and quite enjoyable, IMHO. As usual, Guy Pearce is excellent so it's worth a look for him. Though it's not a gorefest in the traditional sense, it's guaranteed to nauseate some viewers. You should be able to find it cheap. Give it a spin.

It's non-anamorphic. That's the only reason I don't own it. It is a great film though; I just hope for a new transfer.

Look no further than the IMDB's humorous attempt to classify this film --

Genre: Comedy / Western / Drama / Horror / War (more)
-- for an explanation of how unique Ravenous is.

*Interesting minimalist score by Michael Nyman that is at once anachronistic and period.

*Robert Carlyle almost single-handedly owns this film. Steals every single scene he's in. Just a wonderful performance...

*Jeffrey Jones surprises with a several tragicomic moments.

*The supporting players actually transcend the script, give their characters lots of raw, juicy subtext for the viewer to sink their teeth into.

*Repeated weather inconsistancies. In one scene, it's a blizzard... next, it's suddenly dry and snowless! Watch for the white plastic bags in the forest that almost fool the naked eye and pass for snow.

*The ending, as reported, is very slow and very weak and does not do justice to the dramatic buildup beforehand.

*There is enough in this film to please someone looking for a good rental. At $9, I couldn't pass up owning.

I enjoyed this one and saw it before I was aware what "anamorphic" meant and didn't really care at the time. Heck, at the time I didn't even care if a movie was in widescreen or not. I am aware that ignorance is no excuse, so apologies to all. I would definately pick this one up and saw it once in the bargain stand at Wal-Mart, but didn't pick it up. I went back to get it and it was gone.:frowning:

I loved it, but it's definitely not for everybody. The few people I've introduced it to have gotten a kick out of it, though. This is one of those rare films that doesn't fit into any genre. It'd be next to impossible to determine whether a person would like it without actually showing it to them.

I'll echo Justin: it's an excellent film. If the price is good(say, around $15) I'd say go for it...

It's a great movie, I paid something like $27 for it when the MSRP was a ridiculous $34.99 a few years back, and it's worth every penny.

A great, underrated movie.

I love this movie. I love the acting and the directing and especially the bizarre score, at least worth a rental.

Actually, I really loved the score for that final "let's see how many sharp objects we can impale each other on" scene. The score, especially at the end, is the one thing that has made me replay Ravenous a couple times.

Ravenous blends vampirism, cannibalism and native pseudo-myth in a rather unique way along with some very off-beat humour. It's almost as ecclectic as "Brotherhood of the Wolf". (But not quite. There's no soft porn, for one thing...) The plot does sort of fizzle and almost grinds the flick to a halt in places, but at least it's not a 3-hour epic. I'm still completely baffled by the fact that they listened to whatever twit it was who said "Hey, the opening credits should all make a big WHOOOOSH!!! sound. That'd be really cool!"

Decent movie. Great soundtrack. Rent it or buy it cheap.

I loved this in the theater but refused to buy it because it wasn't anamorphic... that is until a few weeks ago when I found it on the bargain shelf at Best Buy for only $5.99.

Another recommendation.
Excellent movie.. funny that it was directed by a vegetarian.
It is almost Burtonesque at times (Especially with Jones around).

I loved that movie. Saw it on cable back in 99 maybe was 2000, but it was great. Some parts were down right scary. When they were outside the cave and he started digging in the sand, that part scared the chit outta me, I don't know why lol. :)
